Regarded as the most important technology developed in terms of communication, Internet offers people the greater freedom of speech and has introduced us a new concept, 'Blogosphere', which refers to the realm of Internet blogs where an individual, group, or corporation presents a record of activities, thoughts or beliefs (Dictionary, 2012). With the use of blogs, people can share their personal lives to the others while some users may utilise them for certain purposes, such as providing news and information. For example, RedmondPie has utilised the features of blogs to share technology-related news and information to the public, where the public can leave comments and share them to Facebook and Twitter.
Blogosphere, to a very large extent, can be regarded as a kind of public sphere, a metaphorical term that is used to describe the virtual space where people can interact (Mckee, 2005). To be specific, the virtual space defined by Mckee may refers to Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, or any kind of platforms where people can interact and communicate on certain topics. In fact, all these social networking platforms, or virtual space, are providing people the freedom to share and receive information, while different users may utilize them for certain purposes. University is engaging with Facebook for education purpose, while the U.S.
president Barrack Obama is using Twitter for political purpose with over 19,000,000
followers.
With the high interactivity and the flow of information, the public is having a faster recognition of reality and is granted the equal access to information and materials from the Internet. In other words, the internet is further promoting the globalization process, as the public can participate in the public sphere in a global scale.

ReplyDeleteThe blogosphere has developed into a version of the public sphere, as it allows for discourse and rhetoric on a number of issues. It has become a place where people can voice their opinions and share their views on global and domestic topics that instigates further conversation. As such, the 'blogosphere', as well as other social networking platforms, have underlined how the public sphere has evolved and shifted online. An interesting thought!

ReplyDeleteI like how you have opened up with a definition of what exactly a 'blogoshpere' is, as it is such a newly used term to me, as I had never written a blog until this class. I agree with you when you say that a blogoshpere can be regarded a public sphere to some extent. The internet is not a public space so how is it a public sphere, but you have mentioned the thought of it being a virtual space where people can interact, which makes sense to me as it is a public sphere, of a virtual kind :) Great informative blog.
ReplyDeleteI think that internet has become a public sphere in which we interact virtually. Although we still use traditional media (television, newspapers, and radio), blogs and social media have become a much preferred method of communicating a message and indeed there has been a 'virtual' shift in how communicate. The blogosphere has enabled the public sphere to engage in meaningful conversation from afar further thus expanding the boundaries of public sphere. A very enjoyable read, thanks.

And I agree the advantages of blogosphere that have been pointed out by you: it has high interactivity and a good flow of information. I think internet has become a lead for the development of blogosphere. If broadband internet doesn’t exist, it is nearly impossible for people to use blog as normal as this. Imagine if internet is slow, no one will use it that often.
